Love Your Tech

Love Your Tech

Are you in love with your tech? February is LOVE YOUR TECH MONTH - yes, I made it up and want you to jump on board!

I added Virtual Assistant services to my transcription company in 2010 because I was sick and tired of hearing entrepreneurs getting stopped in their businesses because the tech was getting in the way of their progress. This was the time of $5K 5-page WordPress sites and no other options. Website builders would build the website, hosted on their servers,  and then charge an astronomical amount just to add a blog or make a few updates. They would lock out or not explain how the entrepreneur could easily add the blog themselves and/or give them access to do it. I started pushing buttons and learning all I could about WordPress so I could help these entrepreneurs at a reasonable price.

Luckily Software as a Service (SaaS) became more and more available and there were many more options for business owners. Now, the pendulum has swung the other way. There are so many options that entrepreneurs are often flummoxed by the choices and how to make a good one for them and their business.

There are a few secrets I’ve learned about tech over the years, that I want to share with you:

  1. There is no perfect system for anyone! Every system has little glitchy things or things that do not align exactly with what you want it to do. The goal is to find a system that works for what you want it to do and discover how to work with the little niggly things that bug you about it.

  2. All tech goes down, needs updates, and can be a general pain in the neck at times as the tech wizards behind the scenes work hard to keep up with an ever-changing web. This month we had tech issues and updates around the new  DMARC and DKIM going into effect. Next month I can guarantee it will be something else.

  3. Most technology is still built for web browsers first. This means that the experience on apps through your phones and tablets will differ than on a desktop web browser. Often this means you cannot do some things from your phone. It’s frustrating at times to try to figure something out when you’re on the go and can’t sit on your desktop all the time. It helps if you understand this and plan for it. Save the activities that have a better experience from your web browser for your office. And while yes, you can run your business from your phone, I would caution that there are some things that might be missing for you if it’s your only workspace.

  4. No matter who you are, you can understand tech. People always say tech is too hard for them to understand. It’s kind of like math in high school. You can understand it if you have a great teacher and mentor that can make it easily digestible. You don’t need to know all the ins and outs, but you can learn enough to get done what you need to run your business. Knowing the tech just this much will help you know what you can and can’t ask your team to do and also raise the red flags on people saying they can do things they can’t to win your business.

  5. Simplicity and efficiency are the keys to loving your tech.

Every month I open my office for two 90-minute sessions for entrepreneurs and small business owners to ask all the questions they have around their technology, strategy, and implementation. You can sign up for the Zoom link here: https://services-foryou.com/office-hours
