Why do I do what I do? Because I can say YES!
When I was in high school, I played softball (and basketball, if you can believe it.. lol) for three years. My mom worked a full-time job and all the time I played only had the chance to leave work a little early one time to catch half of one of my games.
As I became an adult and had a life and children of my own, I decided I wanted to be fully present and not have to say “no” to something I really wanted to do. And I needed to bring income into the household. I decided I would have to be the one running my life and not tied to a corporation or business that relied on a set schedule, so I became an entrepreneur and business owner.
I love that I often saw my children’s games, and practices, and taxied them and their friends around town as they were growing up. I created a business where I had help so I could say yes to being available for doctor appointments and Wednesdays at the movies and waterpark during the summers.
Now my business is even more flexible as it is online and totally portable to wherever the internet stream takes me. This allows for more and bigger yesses in my life!
Some things I’ve been able to say YES to recently:
Mom, my babysitter is sick. Can you come up and watch Avett for a couple of hours so I don’t miss my Bible Study? YES!
Mom, can you spend six weeks at our house when I have back surgery so Caitlin has an extra set of hands with me and Harper? YES!
Mom, the baby is due in August. Will you be here? YES!
Hey, I need a ride to the airport. Are you around? YES!
Our car needs to go to the mechanic. Can you give us a ride back home? YES!
Why don’t you just stay the night instead of heading home, since we’re having so much fun? YES!
Want to grab coffee and go to McKays (iykyk)? YES!
I need a day in nature. Googles someplace not too far that I haven’t been before. Grabs coffee/water and leaves on a Tuesday morning. YES!
I need two days in my pajamas, cranking out work at my computer to get to clients and move my company forward. YES!
Every time one of these situations arises, I have a full heart feeling of gratitude that I can say YES! (not that I always do say YES, just that I CAN).
In the 80s there was a saying that a woman could ‘bring home the bacon and fry it up in a pan.’ This alluded to the fact that she could have it all. I can go into all the repercussions this had on our society at another time. I bring it up now because I feel that the ability to say YES has allowed me to have it all in my own way. I’ve created my life around I CAN instead of I CAN’T and I love it!
