Huff and Puff and Blow Your Business Down

March 19, 20242 min read

The other day I was sitting with my granddaughter and she was standing up a small wood structure and then blowing it over. It reminded me of The Three Pigs story. We had a discussion about building a firm foundation to withstand the pressure from blowing things.

I started thinking about how this story teaches a lesson to business owners. Most early entrepreneurs start their business and then want to jump to having lots of clients and making millions. Well, it doesn’t happen that way or, if it does, it isn’t sustainable for very long.

A sustainable business takes time, intention, strategic planning, and systems - all done in the right order. To set a realistic timeline, you have to develop a strategic plan for growth in your business and intentionally take the right next steps at each stage of your business, putting systems in place as you go and grow. It’s not an overnight process, but I’ve seen it happen where everything seems to be going slow while we are working together to get all these things in place, and then - it seems like overnight - it just all lands in place, and the business takes off. It’s fun when you get to see this happen, but there are bumps along the road and sometimes it feels like it’s never going to work for you or it’s too slow. It will happen if you build up a good foundation on the journey..

When entrepreneurs try to shortcut this process, they often crash and burn quickly.. I often see women who have been in the coaching business for five or ten years and still don't have any processes or systems in place and aren't making enough money to even pay a team to help them. This can be due to a lot of things, but usually I find it stems from not consistently building. They often jump all over chasing the “money” and miss out on establishing their firm foundation.

Are you building a business that can be blown down because the foundation is not sturdy or are you building a solid brick house that can withstand the storms? If you want some help getting on the right track, let’s chat!

Oh yeah, and if you want a fun The Little Pigs refresher, here’s the one we used when I was teaching preschool: https://youtu.be/Bfk16NPlfdI?si=XBuz2W59xQlTuTdv
